Entangled effects of allelic and clonal (genotypic) richness in the resistance and resilience of experimental populations of the seagrass Zostera noltii to diatom invasion ArchiMer
Massa, Sonia I.; Paulino, Cristina M.; Serrao, Ester A.; Duarte, Carlos M.; Arnaud-haond, Sophie.
Background: The relationship between species diversity and components of ecosystem stability has been extensively studied, whilst the influence of the genetic component of biodiversity remains poorly understood. Here we manipulated both genotypic and allelic richness of the seagrass Zostera noltii, in order to explore their respective influences on the resistance of the experimental population to stress. Thus far intra-specific diversity was seldom taken into account in management plans, and restoration actions showed very low success. Information is therefore needed to understand the factors affecting resistance and resilience of populations. Results: Our results show a positive influence of both allelic and genotypic richness on the resistance of...

Enterococcus gallinarum carrying the vanA gene cluster: first report in Brazil BJMBR
Camargo,I.L.B.C.; Barth,A.L.; Pilger,K.; Seligman,B.G.S.; Machado,A.R.L.; Darini,A.L.C..
In 2000, Enterococcus faecalis resistant to vancomycin was first reported at a tertiary hospital in Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. The resistance spread to other hospitals and surveillance programs were established by hospital infection committees to prevent the spread of vancomycin-resistant enterococci. In February 2002, an isolate initially identified at the genus level as Enterococcus was obtained by surveillance culture (rectal swab) from a patient admitted to a hospital for treatment of septic arthritis in the shoulder. The isolate proved to be resistant to vancomycin by the disc diffusion method and confirmed by an E-test resulting in a minimal inhibitory concentration of > or = 256 µg/ml. This isolate was sent to a reference laboratory...

Enzymatic activity of three sugarcane varieties under salt stress AGRIAMBI
Carvalho,Mercia F.; Correa,Marcus M.; Carvalho,Gian C.; Rolim Neto,Fernando C.; Marinho,Gessica P. A.; Andrade,Sunamita B. de.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane is a species of great economic importance to Brazil. The study of enzymatic activity has helped to identify varieties of sugarcane tolerant to salt stress, for planting in Brazilian semiarid regions, where there is the occurrence of saline soils. The objective of this study was to evaluate the enzymatic activity of three varieties of sugarcane subjected to stress caused by salinity. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco, in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The leaf blade samples were collected for analysis of soluble proteins and determination of the activity of catalase and ascorbate peroxidase. The protein content was higher for RB962962 and lower for the...

Epidemiological and microbiological aspects of acute bacterial diarrhea in children from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil BJID
Diniz-Santos,Daniel R.; Santana,José S.; Barretto,Junaura R.; Andrade,Maria Goreth M.; Silva,Luciana R..
In the few cases of acute childhood diarrhea that require antimicrobial therapy, the correct choice of the drug depends on detailed previous knowledge of local strains. In order to establish such parameters in our city, we reviewed the results of all 260 positive stool cultures of children between 0 and 15 years of age during two years at a pediatric tertiary care facility in Salvador, Brazil. Bacterial strains had been presumptively identified by culturing in selective media and by biochemical testing, and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns were automatically detected by the MicroScan Walkaway System. Data about patients' sex and age, monthly distribution of the cases, pathogens isolated and their antimicrobial resistance patterns were recorded....

Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in lung cancer: preclinical and clinical data BJMBR
Jorge,S.E.D.C.; Kobayashi,S.S.; Costa,D.B..
Lung cancer leads cancer-related mortality worldwide. Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the most prevalent subtype of this recalcitrant cancer, is usually diagnosed at advanced stages, and available systemic therapies are mostly palliative. The probing of the NSCLC kinome has identified numerous nonoverlapping driver genomic events, including epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations. This review provides a synopsis of preclinical and clinical data on EGFR mutated NSCLC and EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs). Classic somatic EGFR kinase domain mutations (such as L858R and exon 19 deletions) make tumors addicted to their signaling cascades and generate a therapeutic window for the use of ATP-mimetic EGFR TKIs. The latter inhibit these...

Esterase profile in a pyrethroid-resistant Brazilian strain of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus (Acari, Ixodidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Baffi,Milla Alves; Pereira,Cícero Donizete; Souza,Guilherme Rocha Lino de; Bonetti,Ana Maria; Ceron,Carlos Roberto; Gourlart,Luiz Ricardo.
The cattle tick Boophilus microplus causes great damage in livestock and is considered one of the most important tropical ectoparasites. The traditional method of control is based on the intensive use of pesticides, however the indiscriminate use of these compounds over the years has led to the selection of resistant ticks. Hydrolases, particularly esterases (EST), have been reported to be associated with acaricide resistance in B. microplus. We compared the esterase profile of susceptible and cypermethrin-resistant strains of adult B. microplus and a pyrethroid susceptible reference strain (the Mozzo strain) using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and specific staining. The electrophoretic profiles of protein extracts revealed the presence of four...

Etude des interactions hôte/parasite chez l'huître plate Ostrea edulis et son parasite Bonamia ostreae ArchiMer
Morga, Benjamin.
The history of the French oyster production highlights the fragility of this production against overexploitation and disease outbreaks. In particular, the production of flot oyster, Ostrea edulis, has decreased following the emergence of two parasitic diseases including bonamiosis. The means to fight against bonamiosis are relatively limited. They are mainly based on oyster health surveillance to limit the spread of the disease. However, the use of predictive models of disease progression in infected area would help to improve stock management and minimize the impact pathogens. Moreover the development of resistant animais could help to revive this production. These different approaches require appropriate diagnostic tools, a good knowledge of the life...

Evaluation of bacteriocin-producing Lactobacillus sakei 1 against Listeria monocytogenes 1/2a growth and haemolytic activity BJM
Martinez,Rafael C.R.; De Martinis,Elaine C.P..
Bacteriocin-producing Lactobacillus sakei 1 was cultivated in Brain-Heart Infusion broth (24 h at 25ºC). The culture supernatant was neutralized, filter sterilized and used to test the activity of bacteriocin against Listeria monocytogenes 1/2a, at 8ºC and 15ºC. Non-bacteriocinogenic Lactobacillus sakei ATCC 15521 was used as a negative control. L. monocytogenes 1/2a was inoculated in culture supernatant medium from L. sakei 1 and L. sakei ATCC 15521 and the listerial populations were determined after 0, 5 and 10 days. The bacteriocin production was quantified as arbitrary units per mL (AU/mL) using agar antagonism test. Additionally, to investigate if L. monocytogenes virulence pattern could be changed after bactericion exposure, the ability of L....

Evaluation of experimental sugar beet hybrids for resistance to curly top in Malheur County, OR, 2005 NWISRL
Strausbaugh, C.A.; Gillen, A.M..
Twenty-five experimental sugarbeet hybrids submitted to the official variety trials were evaluated for resistance to Beet curly top virus (BCTV). Hybrids were planted in a commercial sprinkler-irrigated sugarbeet field and exposed to a natural epiphytotic of BCTV. Experimental units were arranged in a randomized complete block design with seven replications. Plots were evaluated for BCTV based on a Disease Index (DI) scale of 0 to 9 (no symptoms to dead) on Sept 14, 2004 by three raters. The moderately severe epiphytotic resulted in uniform disease pressure and significant differences between hybrids for DI, root yield, sugar content, and estimated recoverable sugar. Our disease ratings were positively correlated with (r = 0.632, P < 0.0001)...

Evaluation of fungicide and biological treatments for control of fungal storage rots in sugar beet, 2014 NWISRL
Strausbaugh, C.A.; Olsen L, Nora; Frazier J, Mary; Wambolt, C.
Preventing sucrose losses in storage is important to the economic viability of the sugar beet industry. In an effort to establish additional measures for reducing sucrose losses in storage, ten fungicide and/or biological treatments were evaluated on sugar beet roots in a commercial sugar beet storage building for their ability to limit fungal growth on roots harvested 2 Oct. Six of the treatments were applied as a direct spray to roots, but two treatments were applied as a cold fog and two others were applied as a thermal fog. The treated eight-beet root samples were arranged in a randomized complete block design with 6 replications on top of the commercial sugar beet pile inside a storage building. Roots were evaluated for fungal growth, root rot,...

Evaluation of the genotypic pattern of HIV-1 resistance in AIDS patients failing antiretroviral therapy BJID
Bahia,Fabianna; Pedroso,Célia; Netto,Eduardo Martins; Figueiredo,Ricardo; Pinto Neto,Lauro; Brites,Carlos.
We analyzed the first 96 patients tested for HIV resistance to antiretroviral therapy in three Brazilian states. The HIV-1 reverse transcriptase (RT) and protease (PR) were sequenced by using the ABI ViroSeq system. The drugs previously used for each patient were recorded and correlated with the mutations found in the samples. Viral load (VL) and CD4 count were also recorded. Only one patient had the wild type sequence. The most prevalent mutations were: 184V (59%), 41L (47.9%), 63P (53%), 215Y (50%), 36I (46%), 10I (35%), 67N (42%), 77I (37%), 90M (36%) and 210W (33%). A positive correlation between the number of previously used ARVs and the number of mutations was observed (p<0.05). Associations between mutations and ARV drugs were identified at...

Evaluation of tomato rootstocks to Ralstonia solanacearum and R. pseudosolanacearum in Mata mesoregion, PE Horticultura Brasileira
Albuquerque,Géssyka R; Lucena,Lucas P; Assunção,Emanuel F; Mesquita,Júlio Carlos P; Silva,Adriano Márcio F; Souza,Elineide B; Nicoli,Alessandro; Gama,Marco Aurélio S.
ABSTRACT Bacterial wilt limits tomato production and resistant rootstocks could be important for the integrated management of the disease. Since there is an interaction between local bacterial strains and tomato genotype, this study aimed to evaluate 14 tomato rootstocks to bacterial wilt in the Mata mesoregion of Pernambuco state, Brazil. The rootstocks reaction to two sequevars of Ralstonia solanacearum and two of R. pseudosolanacearum was evaluated in four experiments carried out in the greenhouse using the completely randomized experimental design, with four replications composed of four plants each. Seven genotypes were selected to evaluate the reaction to bacterial wilt as rootstocks grafting in tomato plants ‘Tomini F1’ in a production area with...
